Françoise Magrangeas

Françoise Magrangeas (France, 1949). Women are the main characters in her paintings. A Frenchwoman to the very core when it comes to her outlook on life and on women, Françoise aims to depict a new type of woman in her work: feminine, sensual, voluptuous, humorous and independent. Not for a man’s pleasure, but for their own. The new type of woman is self-assured, confident in herself as a woman and happy with it, but most importantly, without complexes.

With her work, Françoise aims to remind us that pleasure still exists: laughter still goes on, even unseen behind a couch. These are the eyes that look at us from behind the canvas; it is the art of being a woman. Magrangeas works towards a mise en scène in her work, in which the atmosphere the painting creates is important. In Hommes, the series is displayed à table.

Magrangeas makes her paintings on textiles; antique linen undershirts, nightgowns or dresses. She prepares the fabrics before use, sewing or gluing the fabrics together until they are hard enough to be drawn on or painted.
